## DR4 & Domain Rating FAQ

### What is Domain Rating (DR)?

Domain Rating is Ahrefs' score for the strength of a website's backlinks, from 0 to 100. It counts the other websites that link to it with dofollow links, and how strong their own backlinks are: a link from a strong website counts for more.

### What is DR4?

DR4 is the new version of Ahrefs' Domain Rating, previewed in November 2026, which replaces DR3 as the default in Ahrefs from December 1, 2026. Subdomains get their own score instead of taking their root domain's, links from websites that get search traffic count for more, and websites Ahrefs labels as spam drop the most.

### Why is my Domain Rating lower than before?

Ahrefs now rates websites on DR4, which scores only about half as many websites as DR3 did and counts links from websites that get search traffic for more. So small websites often score much lower than before, sometimes 0, and websites Ahrefs labels as spam drop the most.

### Why does my subdomain have its own DR4?

DR4 rates each subdomain on its own links, instead of giving it its root domain's rating. So blog.yourdomain.com can score differently from yourdomain.com: check both here, side by side.

### What is a good Domain Rating?

It depends on your market: compare yours with the websites you compete with, rather than with a set number, side by side here, up to 10 at once. A new website starts near 0, and the scale is logarithmic: going from 70 to 80 takes far more links than going from 10 to 20.

### How do I increase my Domain Rating?

Get links from more websites, and from stronger ones: listings on launch directories, articles that cite your work, and mentions from partners and customers. Only dofollow links count, and more links from a website that already links to you don't raise it.

### How often does Domain Rating change?

Ahrefs updates it as it finds new links and loses old ones, so it moves slowly. A rating checked here is kept for 12 hours.

### Is Domain Rating the same as Domain Authority?

No. Domain Rating is Ahrefs' score and Domain Authority (DA) is Moz's. Both rate a website's backlinks from 0 to 100, each from its own index of the web, so the two numbers differ.

### Is the checker free?

Yes, with no account needed. You can check up to 10 websites at a time, and up to 50 a day, which keeps it free for everyone.

### Is DR4 Checker affiliated with Ahrefs?

No. DR4 Checker is an independent tool, not made or endorsed by Ahrefs. It shows ratings from Ahrefs' free Domain Rating API, which is why each one says Domain Rating by Ahrefs.

Domain Rating by Ahrefs. DR4 Checker is not affiliated with Ahrefs.
